How to Tackle Reading Comprehension Course

Reading comprehension is a complex process which requires the ability to decode words and read fluently. It also entails understanding the meaning of a wide range of vocabulary and how sentences are constructed. Children need to relate and link what they read with what they know. This course* teaches children how to become active readers and to engage with the text they are reading.

In this course, children will learn the key strategies on how to answer reading comprehension questions. They will learn skimming and scanning techniques; how to look for context clues; how to tackle unfamiliar vocabulary; how to construct their answers correctly; how to handle true/false/not given questions; and how to write longer responses.

*Children who embark on this course must have completed a comprehensive phonics programme which teaches them to decode unfamiliar words. They must also display fluency in their reading and be able to construct simple sentences. Please see our Phonics and Beginner Reading Course and also our Early Writer Course for more details.
